What is the Sustainable Forestry Tour?

The Sustainable Forestry Tour for Teachers and Counselors includes beautiful forests, high-tech mills, passionate people, delicious food, proven activities for the classroom, networking with colleagues, VIP treatment and a full-circle experience of modern sustainable forestry.

Details about SFT June 25-28, 2024

The 2024 Sustainable Forestry Tour, based in Moscow ID, is an all expenses paid event that promises to be an incredible VIP experience for 25 teachers and counselors. Participants will walk in beautiful, managed forests; tour big, impressive mills where wood and paper products are made; find out how seedlings are grown in one of the nation’s premier forest nurseries; watch the amazing finesse and skill of an active timber harvest operation; and experience and receive proven classroom activities to take home to their students.  Click here to learn more about the 2024 SFT tour.

Dates: June 25-28, 2024
Location: Moscow, ID, based out of the University Inn
Target audience: 7th-12th grade teachers and school counselors 
Credits: 2-3
Costs: Instruction, materials, lodging, meals, and in-tour transportation are covered by generous sponsors. Scholarships are available for participant travel to and from Moscow.

Who should attend?

School counselors and teachers of 7th -12th grades, especially if you engage youth through career education, agriculture/natural resources, CTE, sciences, social studies, language arts, math, technology, engineering, mechanics and/or STEM. Participants should be currently active in their career, with the expectation of working in a school with students in the upcoming school year.

What will participants do?

Explore beautiful forests • Identify trees • Investigate sustainable forest management • Experience proven standards-based activities to use with your students • Learn about careers • Tour a high-tech sawmill • Network with colleagues • Interact with people who care for forests and make products you use every day • Touch the future forest at a seedling nursery • Enjoy delicious meals • See the full-circle process of making products out of trees while sustaining forest ecosystems • Be motivated to share hands-on activities, knowledge, experiences and passion with your students!

Covid-safe protocols will be in place depending on current CDC and IFPC guidelines.

Sustainable Forestry Tour

Your submission of this application acknowledges your understanding that the Sustainable Forestry Tour is fast-paced with long days involving moderate walking in forested areas and mills. Production facilities also involve some stair climbing and walking on raised open catwalks.
