The demand for wood products is growing at the same rate as world population, about 2% per year. The average American uses 43 cubic feet of wood and 681 pounds of paper each year. In other words, each of us uses about a ton of wood in a year, the equivalent of one 100-foot-tall tree that is 16 inches in diameter. Together, U.S. consumers used 42.2 billion board feet of softwood lumber in 1991.
