Like you, Idaho PLT is working hard to adapt to the evolving learning landscape. We strive to provide resources and opportunities to help you succeed. This summer, we are offering both in-person and NEW virtual 1-credit workshops. Have fun, earn credit, recharge your teacher battery, and leave with terrific activities to use with your students no matter how the next school year unfolds.

CLIMATE LITERACY (1 credit)

Engage your students in understanding how and why the climate of Earth is changing and what can be done about it. Receive training and award-winning materials from Project Learning Tree, Project WET and Boise State University. NOTE: This is an in-person, mostly outdoor class. We are adjusting plans to accommodate social distancing and other practices. PLT HOT TOPICS: FIRE (1 credit)

Learn about the relationship between climate, invasive species and fire; the role fire will likely play in the future; and the pluses and minuses of various management options. Standards-aligned hands-on activities will help participants transfer the information and experiences to the classroom. NOTE: This is an in-person, mostly outdoor class. We are adjusting plans to accommodate social distancing and other practices. Some presentations may move online.  Participant and staff safety is our top priority.

LEARN AND TEACH ABOUT IDAHO NATURAL RESOURCES (Virtual, 1 credit)

For teachers of all grades and subjects. This new self-paced online 1-credit workshop is hosted jointly by Idaho Ag in the Classroom, Project Learning Tree and the Idaho Rangeland Resources Commission. Learn about our proven activities and resources for engaging students in place-based learning. You’ll leave with plans to nurture student literacy about Idaho’s working landscapes while addressing your curriculum and state standards. Workshop fee: $45. 1 optional PD credit available from choice of NNU or University of Idaho ($60 payable to university).

Dates: Cohort 1: July 13-24 or Cohort 2: July 27-August 7

 

IDAHO PROJECT LEARNING TREE VIRTUAL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

One-credit online workshops (choose credit from BSU or NNU)

We are excited to offer virtual professional development opportunities. Each 1-credit training will incorporate two short synchronous online sessions, with the rest of the course being self-paced.  The synchronous session dates will be determined collectively by workshop registrants. Each course will include online training and exploration, outdoor activities, collaboration with peers, and reflection and planning time. You may tailor the training to your specific needs by choosing from a menu of PLT materials. This will occur after the course initiation. The course instructor will be readily available to you throughout the class.

Virtual: PLT for PreK-2nd Grades (1 credit) |  July 1-31, 2020

1 credit. Engage with proven standards-aligned hands-on PLT activities that foster young learners’ wonder and curiosity about the natural world  as you safely take them outdoors to learn and bring nature into the classroom. In addition, PLT’s early childhood materials teach reading, writing, science & STEM, music and movement, and important skills. The PLT materials have been honored with Learning Magazine Teachers Choice Awards.

Tailor the virtual training to your specific needs, through these PLT curriculum choices:

Virtual: PLT for K-8th Grades (1 credit) |  June 26-July 24, 2020

Each activity is tailored to specific grade levels and learning objectives. The materials provide educators the tools they need to bring the environment into their classrooms — and their students into the environment.

Each activity is tailored to specific grade levels and learning objectives. The materials provide educators the tools they need to bring the environment into their classrooms — and their students into the environment. PLT has a wealth of materials for secondary, and we’ll help connect you with the ones that are the best fit for your individual teaching needs.

ONLINE TRAININGS FOR IDAHO STARS HOURS

Idaho Project Learning Tree offers a series of short, self-paced online trainings for Idaho STARS hours.  Some of the longer workshops listed above also offer STARS hours, so check them out, too.  Sign up for and complete the courses anytime during the dates specified.  Once you complete the course requirements, you will receive your certificate to submit for STARS hours. You will not need to wait.

Environmental Experiences for Early Childhood (4 STARS hours) | July 1 -September 30, 2020 (Sign up for and complete the course anytime during these dates)

Through this self-paced, on-line training, you will receive the Environmental Experiences for Early Childhood e-book, which contains over 130 experiences that engage young children in outdoor exploration and play, ideas for creating six Learning Centers in your classroom, and downloadable music files that encourage children to sing, dance and move. You will have the option to purchase a print version of the guide for an additional fee.  Once you complete the course requirements, you will receive your certificate to submit for STARS hours. You will not need to wait.

PLT’s Environmental Experiences for Early Childhood guide received a Teachers’ ChoiceSM Award for the Classroom from Learning® Magazine.

Treemendous Science E-Unit for K-2nd grades (4 STARS hours) July  1-September 30, 2020 (Sign up for and complete the course anytime during these dates)

Through this self-paced online training, you will receive PLT’s Treemendous Science E-Unit which is designed to help K-2 students explore and collect tree data to develop understandings about how trees grow, the roles trees play in ecosystems, and the ways in which trees and humans interact. The Unit is organized around three levels, which will help you tailor your lessons depending on the needs and competencies of your student population. Once you complete the course requirements, you will receive your certificate to submit for STARS hours. You will not need to wait.

Energy in Ecosystems E-Unit for 3rd-5th grades (4 STARS hours) July 1-September 30, 2020 (Complete the course anytime during these dates)

Through this self-paced online training, you will receive PLT’s Energy in Ecosystems E-Unit which helps students in grades 3-5 investigate the ways in which organisms depend on each other to survive and thrive. Students focus on forests – one of the largest and most complex types of ecosystems – and come to understand some of the interactions present in all ecosystems. In doing so, they learn to appreciate the natural systems on which we depend and begin to widen their circle of compassion to include all of nature. Once you complete the course requirements, you will receive your certificate to submit for STARS hours. You will not need to wait.

PROJECT GREEN SUMMIT- Postponed

Join fellow educators and resource providers to share and learn strategies for using the outdoor classroom. Also addressed: the unique challenges faced by rural and remote school districts. An optional third day is a hands-on Forest Field Day with PLT and Society of American Foresters. 1-2 PD credits available.

SUSTAINABLE FORESTRY TOUR – TBD

If you’re a teacher or school counselor of students in 6th-12th grades, please apply to attend the Sustainable Forestry Tour – a VIP experience in the forests and mills of northern Idaho. Deadline for application is March 31, 2020.

PLT WALK IN THE FOREST  – Cancelled

Spend two days learning in the beautiful Priest River Experimental Forest. The first day experience PLT activities to use with young people. The next day, participate in the Forest Field Day – open to family members for a nominal additional fee.

FOCUS ON LITERACY
