Sawdust and other byproducts of the forest-products manufacturing process don’t go to waste.
These byproducts are collected, ground to an appropriate size, and used for fuel to run electric cogeneration plants. Privately owned, cogeneration plants make electric power to run mills and factories, and reduce a forest-products company’s dependence on public utilities.
This has the added benefit of making more of the utility’s energy available to other consumers. On a national basis, forest-products companies are among the most energy-efficient of all manufacturing industries, furnishing up to 75% of their own energy needs through cogeneration.
